Alpha state for peak performance

The alpha state is a state where your brain is functioning at a frequency for peak performance, mentally and physically. The standard frequency that people operate at while awake is the beta state which is between 14 and 30 Hz whereas alpha is between 7 and 13 Hz.

In the alpha state your brain is much calmer and relaxed as it is the state you enter when you are resting. In this state you will experience calamity and this will allow you to transcend your preconceived limits. Here is a chart that illustrates the different states we go into when awake and asleep.

I recall being in the alpha state a few times on the bike and absolutely killing it. You don’t just beat your best power by a few watts but you completely blow it out of the water. This is because you are no longer under the influence of thought and emotion. All you focus on is getting it fucking done, nothing else matters. Your mind and your body are one and there is nothing else in the world. It is one of those sessions where you are super-human and you can do anything.

How do we attain this mystical state? It is quite simple. Before an intense workout or learning session take conscious control of your state of mind by using affirmation and/or visualisation. Be clear on what it is that you want to accomplish, clarity is power. When we focus on what we want it is impossible to focus on what we don’t want.

Affirmation can be things like:

“I’m going to smash this workout like never before.”

“I am the best.”

“I’ve done it before, I can do it again.”

“There’s no limit to what I’m capable of.”

“I am great because I believe it to be so.”

Visualisation means creating a clear image of what you will be doing. Lance Armstrong would stand in front of the mirror before a time trial with all his kit on to help him visualise how he was going to win. You see it before it happens and then it happens how you see it. You repeat this mental image over and over, then you embody it.

In the alpha state we are calm and relaxed. Everything just flows. We don’t think about it, we just express it the way we want it to be expressed. We unlock our creative potential as well as our physical. We conquer ourselves and therefore we can conquer anything.
